The Hänel Multi-Space®

The unique 3-axis lift system with energy recovery!

Energy recovery with the Hänel EcoDrive® system in the Hänel Multi-Space® at Vogel in Hemer

Vogel is an engineering company in Hemer, Germany, which develops and manufactures electric drives and controllers for machinery used in the wire and metal rolling industries. The company also repairs motors, gear units, pumps, transformers and magnets for its customers.

Automated high-tech storage
The expanding business at the Vogel plant in Hemer requires enormous storage capacity.

To keep up with business growth and stay competitive in the future, Vogel decided to expand its site vertically. A shaft extending upward from the basement to the ceiling was erected in the main building to accommodate a Hänel Multi-Space® system com- prised of three lift modules. The installation of the high-tech storage solution nearly tripled the space available in the workshop, office and warehouse areas.

The lift modules of the Hänel Multi-Space® can be expanded both in height and width. The extractor, which travels both horizontally and vertically, works in much the same way as an automated retrieval device in a high-bay rack and shelf system. With the additional horizontal axis, the requested containers are transported to the access point at maximum speed.

The Multi-Space® extends upward through five floors and – with the exception of the third floor – the system is equipped with a front-side access point at each level. Employees from the technical departments have direct access to the material they need.

EcoDrive®: efficient drive system for lower energy consumption

Lowering energy consumption in the warehouse by using efficient, energy-saving storage systems reduces operating costs and helps protect the environment.

The Multi-Space® system at the Vogel plant in Hemer is 25 meters high and is equipped with Hänel’s integrated EcoDrive® energy feedback unit. A frequency converter transforms the kinetic energy of the descending extractor into electrical energy.

That way up to 40 % of the energy used for the upward run of the extractor can berecovered and fed back into the electrical supply system. This energy can be used elsewhere, for example by other Lean-Lifts® in a cluster.

Carefully selected, high-quality components bring additional energy savings. High-grade Hänel slider components on the containers minimize friction during storage transactions, which helps save even more energy. Optional smooth-action plastic rollers also help to avoid friction losses.

Maximum storage capacity
The height-optimized vertical storage provided by the Multi-Space® offers more capacity within the same footprint when compared with conventional storage systems. The system saves up to 60 % of expensive storage space.
